WHY THE STAR WARS EPISODE NINE TITLE MATTERS
It’s 2019, a new year has begun and its time to hit the reset button. It seems like Disney/Lucasfilm will this year try attempt the same feat with Star Wars Episode 9. The film is set to be released later on in the year December 20th in fact. With J.J Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8, Lost fame) is set once again to reprise his role as director which he first took up in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens which was the seventh installment to the franchise. The return to form led episode seven to become the third highest grossing film of all time being able to cross the two Billion that’s right two billion dollar club throughout the course of it’s world wide run. The series also stars new franchise players with Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron and some returning cast members from the original Carrie Fisher whom reprised her role in 7,8 & the upcoming episode 9 through unused footage from episode 7. Harrison Ford returned in 7. While Hamill returned for 8 and rumors have it he’ll be in nine however we don’t know yet how big or small his role may be and now Billy Dee Williams himself Lando seems to be returning to the galaxy far far away. Episode 9 seems to be shaping up greatly, however the franchise has not been met with universal praise.
After the release of Episode 8, The Last Jedi we’ve seen a divide amongst fans who felt the film targeted them in the wrong way. Film is subjective and no matter what not everyone likes every movie. I’ll admit I wasn’t a fan of the film but have recently start to warm up to it as a part of a story. This played a factor whether Disney wants to believe it or not into the box office for Solo: A Star Wars Story which was a film that followed Han Solo and Chewbacca in their early years, which was originally directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller until Ron Howard replaced them. The movie was eventually released to a mixed to negative reviews and very poor box office results. Disney now scaling back hopes to bring the fans back in with the final installment but boy do they have A hill to climb with all the recent backlash. However with Star Wars Celebration in a few months I wanted to discuss A hot button topic that’s been going around as to what the title of Episode 9 might be, some rumors state the title has been leaked online however Disney has not acknowledged any of those would be titles.
Now usually with every title comes much speculation and discussion within film fandom as to what might occur in the series next however since we don’t know the title quite yet. I would like to talk about why the title this go around matters. Now going back to 77’ George Lucas at first never intended to add the number titles into the original star wars but did so once he created the next film by titling it Episode 5 : The Empire Strikes Back however since then the titles have garnered much discussion. However the last time fans did that it created a divide with episode 9 so your probably wondering why am I telling you all this.
Well, simply because this star wars movie is supposed to be closing the journey we started in 77’ and bringing it all together. So the title now means so much more importance than it ever has been and I’m very excited to see what it might be, people claim the title is “Balance Of The Force” I don’t know if I like this title because I feel as if it lacks that “Umph” that attracts most Star Wars fan. This journey will be coming to an end so it’s title will be remembered. Due to the fact that we’ll never see the majority of these characters ever again some of them that' we’ve held for fourty strong years might leave us in the story. So that’s why this episode matter because it’s the be all end all for a great intergalactic story. So I hope it’s a great one in order to be able to let fans speculate and have fun doing it.
